Saturday creative writing workshops are one day topics of interest for busy writers. Bring your own lunch. Coffee and tea available. Unless otherwise stated all workshops $60.00 members and $80 non-members and run from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Please enter by door #2

March 27 Whose Story Is It with Jill Robinson AWCS 2010 Writer-in-Residence
Point of View, Ownership, and Telling It Like It Is. Some writers say that choosing the right point of view through which to tell the story is the most important decision a writer makes, and that most problems encountered in the writing process can be traced to POV concerns. Changing point of view can certainly have a startling impact on your narrative, and can often help get you unstuck when you're stuck. April 24 Going Online: Creative Writing on the Web with Claire Lacey
The Internet is a dynamic, constantly changing medium. Blogs, twitter, and other social media offer exciting new possibilities for writers to engage creatively with an audience. In this workshop, you will learn how to establish and promote your writerly presence on the web.

April 24 Haiku & Tanka Poetry with Joanne Morcom

May 1 Your Modifier is Dangling - Best Practices of Copyediting with Lori Burwash
Leaving no word unturned, copy editing ensures clarity, consistency and accuracy in writing. In this workshop, we’ll look at common issues in grammar, spelling, punctuation and other areas. We’ll also talk resources and tips, bust some myths and set right the confused and misused. In-class practice will help you apply what you're learning, and Lori's stories from the trenches will help you avoid her (and others') mistakes.

May 8 Setting Your Profession to Fiction with Elaine Morin
Calling all engineers, daycare workers, baristas and farmers! Have you ever imagined your work world inside a novel or story? Here’s your chance to find creative expression for some of those exasperating, ridiculous and inappropriate elements of your job. Can you turn your workmates into characters? In this workshop, we’ll examine the benefits and pitfalls of setting your profession to fiction, then follow up with writing exercises, engineered to erect a solid story foundation!

May 15 To Write Monologues or Not to Write... with Caroline Russell-King.
Award winning comedy playwright, Caroline Russell-King shows you how to master the art of writing dramatic and comedic monologue. Whether your dream is to perform, do stand up, audition or round out your playwriting skills this class is for you. Find out how dramatic monologues and soliloquies differ from prose and storytelling. Learn about the tricks and secrets of the trade. This class is also for those interested in writing one person shows.

June 5 Sonnets 9 - 4 pm with Micheline Maylor
Through the understanding of the origins of the sonnet in English and following its history though the centuries, an historic overview will accompany writing exercises. Course material required is "Jailbreaks:99 Canadian Sonnets" Edited by Zach Wells ($20). Previous poetry experience is strongly recommended.

June 5 & 12 (Two Saturdays) 9 am -4 pm. Getting the Words Right with Susan Calder. Fees: Members: $100 Non Members: $120
Manuscript revision from the big picture to the sentence and word. Learn how to take your first draft to the publishable level. Crack open the story with writing exercises. Enhance your characters, meaning and reader connection. Please bring a short story, novel chapter or non-fiction piece (typed, double spaced) to work on in class.

June 12 Writing for the Market 9 - 4 pm with Micheline Maylor
Want to start publishing your work but you don't know where to start? This class combines research, pointed writing exercises, and editing to help you on your way and unravel the mysteries of submissions. If possible, please bring your laptops.

June 12 MS Word for Writers with Lynn Fraser
In this one day workshop you will learn how to change basic template settings, create a writing template for prose and poetry that includes all your contact information and basic spreadsheet set up to track and record submissions - making word a friendlier place to write. Laptops are encouraged, but not necessary. Additional Materials Fee $5.
